Nesting opportunities for cavity nesters in particular are rare. The probability that a nesting box is actually occupied – the best time to put one up is December – is very high. In addition, the boxes are also used by the birds as shelter in winter. The perch in front of the entrance hole is used by resident birds as a stage for their song performances. You therefore have a good chance of being able to study the behaviour of a bird species extensively if you turn your property into a substitute for natural embankments. Many species of tit, such as the blue tit or fir tit, nest in boxes with an entrance hole of 27 to 28 mm in diameter. Hang Erdtmann’s nest box at a height of between 1.50 m and 3.00 m with the entrance hole facing south-east, and your nest box will invite many songbirds to nest and spend the night during the winter months.
